TRDL 2012 Series, No. 17 – Captain Cold [TRDL Redesign]
This was done for the TRDL R3 Jam this week, the subject being Flash’s Rogues Gallery
This is a simple TRDL Redesign for the DC comics character Captain Cold, one of the classic members of Flash’s Rogues Gallery. I was always interested in his crazy slit eye mask thing, though the rest of his look, while vaguely elfish, left me, uh, cold. And I never wrapped my head around his use of a space pistol to shoot cold rays, at least in the modern era.
My redesign is not a Blank Slate type, but rather designed to be familiar enough to readers to be recognizable as Captain Cold related i the original sense, but new, such as might occur in a New 52 type reboot, or as sometimes occurs, a new person showing up on the scene wearing the colors of the original character. Perhaps his daughter, something like that. For the weapon, I imagined that her sold powers need a vessel, or a delivery system, so being a bad ass she carries a sawed off shotgun like a Mossburg or something. For that slit mask, I went translucent. It was the concept that sold the redesign to me when I was concepting it. When I executed it, however, it was jarring: fortunately I kept playing around and ended up with a Priss style airbrushing thing happening.
