TRDL 2012 Series, No. 38 – Iron Man: Hypervelocity Armor

This was done for my ongoing Iron Man Series, in which I attempt to draw every Iron Man armor, and many of his friends and foes…

I really liked the look of Iron Man: Hypervelocity, the mini-series by Adam Warren and Brian Denham. The concept for the armor was interesting to me, as Warren seems to bring the same influences to the table that I do: namely, lots and lots of Shirow. When I drew this armor, I was working from some of the art in the comic itself, and was either misreading visually what was going on, or the interior art was deviating strongly from what Warren originally sketched out in his concept art (which I saw online and drew me to the series in the first place). So I redrew the piece from scratch, using his concept art as a guide. With a few exceptions (the collar swivel socket thing, the use of straight edged sensors and lines on an otherwise organically curved armor design) it’s one of my favorites to date. The only major changes from his design that I implemented were a greater separation between the helmet and the neck ring, which in his are designed to look integrated and seemed too reminiscent of the Batman-what-can’t-turn-his-head, though it DOES swivel side to side, just not much up/down.
But really, that's my personal artist's preference. In general, I've been in awe os what Adam Warren has done domestically to bring some of the best manga influences to mainstream comics.
