TRDL 2013 Series, No. 54 - Daredevil Year One [TRDL Redesign]

This piece was done for a few reasons. It was responding to an R3 Challenging Art Challenge regarding Daredevil, but it was also done as a love letter to R3 member John F, whose work I just adore. I knew he'd dig an old school Daredevil, but with materiality and texture and rawness to it. It's a very mild redesign. It supposes that Daredevil's early vigilante crawls were done in a version of the all red costume, because I just love the look of the uniform in monochrome, and always have. I've done some tweaks to the design to give it a DIY look: the mask is stitched together, the costume has seams to it evoking wrestling garb from the 40s and 50s, and the boots are work boots with covers. The principle conceit in this design is that the garrote/ lifeline wire is compressed within the baton, so when he triggers its release there's a small pop as the wire unspools. It's done once, and not retractable. So here, he's got a bit of blood in his saliva and he's running low, so I see him as being in a bit of trouble and preparing to either escape or get serious with that garrote wire. You can see experimental versions of colors including red/yellow classic and red/black, in the process notes via the link below.
