TRDL 2014 Series, No. 08 - Susan Storm
I actually did two pieces for this week: one with the new costume as per the jam guideline, and then my own redesign. I took the approach of not a 'clean slate' redesign but a recognizable brand update. I think the red costume design, though not my favorite for several reasons, is only recognizable because of the '4' symbol. There's nothing particularly wrong with that: many design updated over the years have been radical and yet got it right enough to become part of the collective awareness of that character, such as Spider-Man's black costume, or some of Iron Man's major moves. In my redesign, I wanted to explore two things: something subtle but different in the way the '4' is used, and an expression of the unstable molecules. I didn't want to put the 4 huge, cropped, off to a shoulder/side of torso the way I sometimes do with major redesigns, because the recognizable 4 motif is essential to the design recognition for the FF property. But I inverted it, such that it's a negative space under the white layer of the costume. I also showed a way for the unstable molecules to be useful and obvious without going in the direction of 'sexy sue' skin baring as was done in the Malice costume for example. Here, it's warm weather, so she's retracted the sleeves, though the leg sections remain. Anyway, I'm pretty happy with this design, overall.
